Stainless Steel Tree Sculpture

Birmingham 21 Memorial

New Street Station, Birmingham

Artist: Anu Patel

Working in collaboration with network rail and artist Anu Patel, m-tec has fabricated and installed the poignant trees in memory of the victims of the Birmingham Pub Bombings on the 44th anniversary of the attack.

The memorial consisted of three 15ft trees fabricated from a blend of Corten steel and stainless-steel resting in iroko wood planters offering a flow of textures and finishes.

Each tree contains seven leaves which have been designed to bear the names of the 21 victims along with their ages. These details have been laser cut into the underside of the steel leaves to act as a lasting memory to their friends and family.

"A beautifully respectful & collaborative installation."

Over a period of 24 weeks, the trees were manufactured in-house by our expert craftsmen before being installed onsite in their new homes in front of Birmingham New Street Station and Grand Central.

During the unveiling ceremony, the designer and local artist Anu Patel said she hoped its prominent position would provide comfort to relatives and help inform future generations about the atrocity.

Pride of place.

Community projects are something that m-tec are incredibly passionate about. We are especially proud to be involved in this project bringing Anu’s vision to life and honouring the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings.

It’s a very poignant and lasting tribute to those who lost their lives and also for their loved ones.”
